Seed Treatments - Oilseed Rape

Back to Technical Data

Seed Dressings.
Seed-borne pathogens pose a threat to establishment and development of a profitable crop. Seed-borne diseases can affect seedling establishment or they can be transmitted from seed to seedling. Seedlings and young plants are put at further risk by soil-borne disease and soil pests. Protection of seeds and young seedlings is the primary objective of seed treatment.
Seed treatments may also provide additional benefits over and above seed and soil-borne disease and pest control. These include early season foliar disease control, additional pest control and plant growth regulatory effects.
Oilseed rape fungicides available for seed dressings include Thiram (Damping off) and iprodione (Alternaria). These are supplemented with the addition of an insecticide. Since the withdrawal of Gamma-HCH in 1999 oilseed rape growers have had to rely on multiple applications of pyrethroid insecticide sprays to control flea beetle and aphids that spread Beet Western Yellow Virus. Chinook from Bayer CropScience has now filled this gap and has allowed the addition of an insecticide to the seed dressing. Chinook contains betacyfluthrin and imadacloprid, which controls early flea beetle attack and aphids but has no detrimental effect on non-target organisms.
DO NOT BROADCAST SEED TREATED WITH CHINOOK

New seed will come with Rovral + Thiram + Chinook.

Where you are home saving seed you have a choice depending on your seed quality. If your crops are heavily laid, germination will be of crucial importance as some fields may have high levels of Alternaria and seeds suffering from pre-germination. Good sampling will be very important and having this seed tested at an experienced seed quality analysts such as NIAB is crucial.

If your seed is of lower quality in seed size, weight and colour you may be better off buying new seed..
On most crops Roval+Thiram+Chinook will offer good control of Alternaria (Rovral) and flea beetle (Chinook) if you are home saving
