Seed Treatments - Winter Beans

Back to Technical Data

This will depend on results from seed testing and problems encountered previously. Pests and diseases of seed and seedlings greatly contribute to seedbed losses. With the relatively high cost of seed, such losses need to be avoided where possible. The range of seed treatments available for beans covers a wide spectrum of problems, however, the cost of these treatments needs to be taken into consideration when making your choice of material.

Damping Off Diseases - These diseases are more prevalent in cool, wet conditions, particularly if germination and emergence is slow. Winter beans are not as susceptible as peas and if seed is healthy treatment will not be necessary.

Ascochoyta - This is caused by 3 closely related fungi .The most common in beans is Ascochoyta fabae. Seed infection can result in the development of foot rot at the time of emergence, which later can spread up the growing plant. Infected seedlings can develop brown/black lesions on the stem and foliage. These can infect plants close by. Laboratory tests are necessary to determine if seed is infected. Seed treatment only gives partial control of the disease. Treatments to farm saved seed should only be applied where infection is between 1 and 3 %.
