Winter Bean Varieties (Back to top)
Winter Bean varieties do not have a vernalisation period. However this does not mean you can drill them well into the spring as they will fail to tiller, be relatively short and be extremely late to harvest. TGW is normally above 530 gms. Most common varieties are colour flowered. These tend to be higher yielding than the white flowered varieties (tannin free). Many compounders prefer tannin free varieties for inclusion in certain non-ruminant feeds.
As regards field characteristics there is little to choose between white and coloured varieties. Yields of most common varieties are very similar and the choice of variety should depend on the site to be planted. Is the site one where you expect the crop to grow lush, rank and tall or a site where the crop is going to be more prone to problems from ascochoyta?

Variety review
Clipper - High yield, good standing ability. Very good resistance to ascochyta. Relatively late maturing, moderately tall strawed. (Breeder PBI Cambridge) Coloured flower.
.
Punch - Moderate yields with intermediate length straw of medium strength. Susceptible to ascochyta. Relatively early maturing, now removed from recommended list. (PBI Cambridge) Coloured flower.

Striker - Moderate straw length, relatively poor standing power. Lower yielding than Clipper and Target. Good resistance to ascochyta. Relatively late maturing. Now moved to outclassed category. (PBI Cambridge) Coloured flower.

Target - High yields and good standing ability. Intermediate straw length, good standing power, late maturing and rather susceptible to ascochoyta. (PBI Cambridge) Coloured flower
.
Silver - Yields up to 15% lower than the best varieties. Intermediate straw length but of poor standing ability. It is a relatively early maturing variety and has very good resistance to ascochoyta (PBI Cambridge) White flowered. Recently removed from the list.

Wizard (IB104) - Hoping for a place on the list this year. It is shorter and slightly earlier than Clipper and stiffer in straw than Target. It has a 5% higher yield. Seed supplies may be short this year.
